We would like to thank Moana Mika and the editorial team for their nuanced reporting, which helps raise public awareness of a medical condition that is still often underestimated.

Concussions are among the most common forms of traumatic brain injury and at the same time among the most frequently underestimated. CT and MRI scans often appear normal, even though affected individuals may experience significant limitations in daily life: concentration difficulties, sleep disturbances, headaches and neck pain, visual fatigue, dizziness, balance problems, and symptoms triggered by physical or cognitive exertion.

This diagnostic gap has real consequences. Without a targeted assessment concept, symptoms may be misinterpreted, therapies delayed, and affected individuals, whether professionals, students or athletes, may return to work, school or sport too early or under the wrong conditions.

Dizziness after trauma is one of the most common and at the same time most frequently misinterpreted leading symptoms. Not all dizziness originates centrally in the brain. After a trauma, small calcium crystals in the inner ear, known as otoliths, can become dislodged and irritate the balance organs. As a result, the brain receives conflicting information about body position, even though no actual movement is taking place. Clinically, this can manifest as spinning vertigo or a sensation of swaying.

Once the underlying mechanism is identified, targeted treatment becomes possible, for example through repositioning manoeuvres or, in more complex cases, with the help of a specialised rotational chair for diagnosis and therapy. What matters is not the symptom alone, but the underlying neurophysiological mechanism.

BrainCare follows a modern, evidence-based treatment approach built on four pillars:

Precise functional diagnostics instead of undifferentiated standard assessments

Multimodal, evidence-based neurorehabilitation tailored to specific subsystems

Interprofessional collaboration between medicine, therapy and neuropsychology

Early, individually dosed activation aligned with each person’s capacity and symptom pattern

New medical guidelines take time to become widely established in clinical practice. This makes targeted education all the more important, so that the return to work, school or sport can be based on a solid diagnostic foundation.

Do you have questions about your own situation or would you like to learn more about our assessment concept? Please get in touch. We support you from diagnosis through to your return to everyday life.

NZZ am Sonntag (6.6.2026 – German onlyHerunterladen

NZZ am Sonntag recently published an in-depth feature article on the topic of concussions, also highlighting the work of BrainCare Medical Group.
