BrainCare at the High-Performance Sports Symposium in Berlin

On May 29, 2024, the 19th Symposium on High-Performance Sports took place at the “An der Alten Försterei” stadium of 1. FC Union Berlin. The event captivated over 750 participants with a diverse program covering the various medical and sports science aspects of high-performance sports.

Together with Natalie Kühn, Prof. Dr. med. Ingo Schmehl, Tim Meyer, and Claus Reinsberger, we had the opportunity to actively contribute to the topic of traumatic brain injury. We would especially like to thank Carola Scholz Franke from VBG and Axel Ekkernkamp for the kind invitation.

Our personal highlights of the event:

  • According to the 2024 Sports Report by VBG, the head is the fourth most frequently affected body region in accidents, with 8.3% of injuries, following the ankle, knee joint, and thigh.
  • As Germany’s largest accident insurer, VBG plays a pioneering role in dealing with sports injuries.
  • A detailed examination by a specialized center should be initiated (at the latest) in cases of persistent symptoms or work-related disability due to traumatic brain injury of any severity, serving as the basis for appropriate therapy.
  • Close cooperation between team doctors, specialists, clubs, associations, and insurers is essential.
  • Concussion tools assist medical professionals and laypeople in the initial diagnosis and management of head injuries.

Another important instrument is the concussion tools, which help both medical professionals and laypeople in the initial diagnosis and management of head injuries, thereby contributing to improved care.
